Handing your vote to someone you trust

Project Catalyst is Cardano's community fund. People who hold ADA, Cardano's currency, vote on which ideas get money. Between late 2021 and mid 2022 it gave more than $31 million to almost 1,000 projects.

Voting well takes hours. You have to read hundreds of proposals. So Catalyst planned delegation: you pick people you trust, called dReps, and they vote for you. I designed how that works on screen.

Getting started

Before you can vote, Catalyst needs to know which wallet holds your ADA. It takes two short steps: connect your wallet, then set a PIN.

Step 1 of 2

Connect your wallet

Your voting power comes from the ADA in your wallet. We never move it.

Step 2 of 2

Set a PIN

You’ll use it every time you vote in the Catalyst app. Try typing one.

Finding your people

The list shows each dRep and what they care about. You can search, filter by topic or sort. Tick a few and your voting power splits between them straight away.

Getting to know a dRep

You wouldn't hand your vote to a stranger. Each profile shows how much voting power a dRep already holds, how many people trust them and what they've done for Cardano.

I audit smart contracts for a living, so I read the code behind a proposal, not just the pitch.

Splitting your vote

You don't have to back just one person. Drag a slider and the others make room. The total always stays at 100%, so you can't give away more than you have.

Split your voting power

Give more to the people you trust most. It always adds up to 100%.

Making it count

Delegating moves real voting power, so the last step asks you to hold the button, not just click it. A slip of the finger can't send your vote somewhere you didn't mean.

When the wallet drops out, the screen says what went wrong and that nothing was sent. Then it gives you one way forward.

Most people check in from their phone. The same steps fit one column. Your picks wait in a bar at the bottom, and every dRep gets a page of their own.

Where it led

This was one of the most fun projects I've worked on. A whole community deciding together where millions of dollars should go, and my job was to make that feel simple and safe.

It stayed with me. The ideas about voting, trust and showing where money goes became part of the inspiration for Kwanda, a community fund I built as a side project.
